As we look ahead to 2025, it’s essential for travelers to stay informed about new requirements that may impact domestic and international trips. At Gurvy Travel, we’re here as a resource to guide you through these changes and help you plan confidently.
Starting in 2025, travelers to Europe will need to complete the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). This new requirement applies to visitors from visa-exempt countries, including the U.S., Canada, and Australia. The ETIAS application is a quick online process costing approximately $7.50, valid for up to three years or until the travelers passport expires, whichever comes first. However, children under 18 and adults over 70 years old can apply for free. If Europe is on your list, make sure you complete this step before departure. Once the system is up and running, prospective visitors will be able to apply for ETIAS online,. Once approved, the travel authorization will be electronically linked to the applicant’s passport.
International travelers planning to visit the United Kingdom (UK) will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) starting January 8, 2025. This will allow UK authorities to screen visitors prior to their arrival, strengthening border security and streamlining the entry process. Valid for two years with a cost of approximately $13.00.
If you are traveling to Europe before the system officially begins operation in spring of 2025 you can travel without applying for ETIAS. Once it launches it will become mandatory for short term travel.
Once approved, an ETIAS authorization allows multiple short visits—typically up to 90 days within any 180-day period—to participating countries. While the authorization is valid for three years, it is tied to your passport. If your passport expires during that time, you’ll need to reapply for a new ETIAS to continue your travels.
Keep in mind ETIAS is not a visa, it requires a quick online application with approval delivered via email within an hour. Gurvy recommends applying 4 days prior to your flight. Airlines will likely require proof of your ETIAS in order to board your flight.
The REAL ID Act will be fully enforced in 2025. If you’re flying domestically in the U.S., you’ll need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or an acceptable alternative, such as a passport. Now is the time to verify that your ID meets the new standards.
